Developing Social Skills

Positive relationships, co-regulation and growth

Building social confidence through positive behaviour support

At NT&AS, we know that social and emotional development is fundamental to learning.
Our teachers are trained in Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) through our Professional Caring Relationships (PCR) model — a non-oppressive approach that promotes understanding, trust and meaningful change.

We never use physical intervention or restraint. Instead, our teachers create calm, consistent environments where children and young people feel safe to learn, reflect and grow.

How we help young people develop social skills

  • Collaborative learning opportunities encourage communication, teamwork and mutual respect.

  • Teachers model positive social interactions and embed social skills naturally within everyday learning.

  • Co-regulation and self-regulation are explicitly taught to help manage emotions and behaviour constructively.

  • We promote a growth mindset, helping young people see mistakes as part of the learning journey.

Embedded PSHE and emotional learning

Our dedicated PSHE Coordinator ensures that key elements of the curriculum are integrated into lessons when appropriate.
Social and emotional aspects of learning are taught implicitly — young people are encouraged to listen, respond thoughtfully and communicate positively with others.

Flexible, safe delivery

Flexible, safe delivery

The NT&AS safer delivery model provides the flexibility needed to meet each learner’s circumstances. Maintaining education during periods out of school supports emotional wellbeing and prevents isolation.

Our one-to-one approach extends beyond teaching — it strengthens family and social connections to promote long-term educational success.

NT&AS works closely with CAMHS and other services to ensure joined-up support that meets both educational and emotional needs. When requested, we also provide inclusion and transition support for schools and colleges — helping learners reintegrate and sustain progress.
