J has a diagnosis of ADHD. He has delayed learning that is affected by his concentration, listening and attention difficulties; as well as his speech, language and communication difficulties. He has a hearing impairment and significant short term and working memory difficulties. He was out of school for almost six months prior to being referred to NT&AS.
On referral J was unable to read or write his name. He has progressed to reading phonics phase 5 this year. The NT&AS teacher has used J’s love of music to inspire him to read and write. J has made excellent progress both in Maths and English this year and his confidence and self esteem has increased.

KD, year 12
K has a diagnosis of ASC/Asperger’s Syndrome; Marfanoid Habitus overlapped with EDS-HT (Hypermobility Type), Tourette’s, Sensory processing disorder, Sleep disorder, ADHD and has a number of complex needs related to his diagnosis including sensory issues and impulsivity.
Previously a Prevent referral and monitored by Channel Panel, K took politics AS level this year. It has helped him see many other perspectives other than extremist views. He is now going to progress onto A Level.
DW, year 11
Owing to anxiety D had not been to school since Year 7, spending time at mum’s hairdressers every day. Referred in January Year 10. D was keen to learn and assessment indicated that she could manage a GCSE pathway. Gradually extending subject areas, a positive relationship built up and she achieved 5 GCSEs; Art grade 8, Dual Science 6, English 4, Geography 5.
The following year she was given a place on a BTEC level 3 course but experienced difficulties in managing college. She was re-referred to NT&AS for transition support and is now settling slowly into college and enjoying herself. She now has aspirations to become a paramedic.
