NT&AS GREEN PAPER SERVICES

Transforming the Lives of Children and Young People in Care

NT&AS is currently providing services to local authorities and the independent sector that directly address many of the proposals contained within The Green Paper. These include:-

“Virtual Headteacher and schools”

NT&AS was instrumental in the development of the Liverpool Virtual School and in helping raise levels of achievement for looked after children. NT&AS is presently working with local authorities and schools in developing similar initiatives.

Foster Carers Training & Support

NT&AS provides

  • direct training and ongoing professional support to foster carers on a range of educational issues
  • a National Education Telephone Helpline for foster carers (due for launch in January, 2007)

Foster Care Multi-Agency Support

NT&AS provides a comprehensive range of education services to all children living in foster care where providers commission multi-agency support.

NT&AS directly supports children, their carers and schools. Successful education support leads to care placement stability which frequently prevents the need for a higher cost so-called specialist placement for children, with inevitably poorer outcomes.

Residential Care Multi-Agency Support

NT&AS is campaigning against the increasing use of on-site schools being built and developed by many independent residential providers to meet the educational needs of looked after children.

We believe this approach is stigmatising, unhelpful and unlikely to lead to higher levels of educational achievement. It is also in direct conflict with our understanding of what good parents would wish for their own children and with the agenda of normalisation and inclusion to which we are committed.

NT&AS provides education services to  children living in residential care that focus on their inclusion in schools and in their communities as well as maximising their opportunities for educational, personal and social development.

Better Support In School

NT&AS plans for individual children and provides the expertise and level of support required to access school placements, to secure successful attendance and to maximise opportunities for high levels of achievement.

Independent Education Services to Children In Care

NT&AS understands the complexities of both the education and the social care sector as well as the gap between them that has done so much damage to children’s life chances.

NT&AS provides consultancy services to local authorities that focus on the need to close the gap between education and social work and to exploit the huge potential of Children’s Services in working together on a shared agenda.
