Children in Care

NT&AS supports choice for children and young people with disabilities and their families

The National Teaching and Advisory Service supports young people with statements of special educational needs. We promote education inclusion for young people with disabilities in mainstream and special schools.

Young people

We hold high expectations and are committed to providing all young people with the opportunity to participate and contribute to society. We aim to give young people the opportunity to participate and have their own views heard.

Families

We work closely with families, listening carefully to their views, ensuring everyone is able to contribute and that children and young people are always at the centre of plans. We can help families understand the sometimes complex processes and bureaucracy involved in providing education.

Schools

We provide advice for schools helping them to understand and support young people with disabilities. We can advise on access issues as well as training staff in meeting the needs of individuals.

Health and Social Care

We work closely with professionals from all statutory agencies bridging the gap between education, health and social care.

Success Stories* >>

Mark...

Mark has a diagnosis of autism. He was not able to attend his special school because of his complex behaviour needs.

NT&AS listened to him and his family to understand hopes and aspirations. We provided 1:1 teaching support helping him to develop basic skills and to function in social settings. NT&AS identified difficulties in transport and worked on ways to enable Mark to access the service provided. We now support his school attendance through sharing information and strategies and modelling effective working practice.

Paul...

Paul has complex needs and communicates in a limited way using PECS. He can move himself but requires the use of a wheelchair and assistance throughout the day.

His family was keen that he should attend mainstream secondary school which NT&AS supported, providing 1:1 teaching assistance and training and mentoring for a school learning assistant. NT&AS supported class teachers in better understanding his needs and ways in which he can be included in lessons. At break times NT&AS helped him to make friends.

Sarah...

Sarah displayed symptoms of mental ill health including depression. She had been unable to attend school for some time.

NT&AS worked with her in the family home helping her to regain her confidence in her academic abilities and to develop the social skills to move forward. Lessons were moved to the library and eventually NT&AS supported her inclusion to a local college by working alongside college lecturers and gently building upon the success so far. She achieved excellent GCSE results and has been able to attend college independently since moving into Year 12.
